Piled on top
Tonight I am making tater-tot hot dish for supper. I just brown hamburger with onion, mix corn, green beans, pepper and celery soup with a little milk- pour over the hamburger and top with the tater tots. Bake for one hour at 350. Tonight I added a layer of cheddar cheese above the sauce. We love this dish and haven't had it all winter so it's about time. The leftovers are great too. Darlene & Ann always lines their taters up just so in nice little rows. I just throw mine on top in a jumble. What method do you use? Probably the way your mom did it I bet.

Hi Laurie!
I laughed when I read about the tator tots. Eric just piles them on, while I....make sure they are put in neat, symmetrical rows:) Have a good week! I will be sending you a copy of Courtney's book later this week---I hope you enjoy reading it!!
We actually use Crispy Crowns, the taters that are about half as thick as the regular tots. Because this is Jimmer we're talking about, I pile them all over AND make an extra pan of them while the hot dish bakes, because they have to be crispy and he likes more tots than meat. And NEVER add a green bean or bit of corn, just meat, soup, and tots. My mom used to add rice and soy sauce to hers, good flavor and it stretched the hamburger even farther. I'm thinking this has to go on the menu this week!

It has never even occured to me to line the tator tots in neat rows. I pour on the bag and spread them out. I sprinkle some soy sauce over mine before I eat it. This is a dinner that Paul cooks more often than I do. My girls just eat the tots. After seeing the movie Napolean Dynomite I will always view tator tots as a humorous food.
Are you going to eat your tots?
It never occurred to me to do it that way either. Darlene was the first person I ever saw do it that way and I was like "seriously?!" Do you remember that Darlene? If you google tater tots under images you will see that most people DO indeed line them up. It was more difficult to find a picture of them piled on. Soy sauce and rice would be good I bet. Shelly, I hope Jim appreciates your extra food prep efforts! :)
Shelly-
Your post made me laugh:) I had never thought of putting vegetables in my my tator tot hot dish until I met Eric. Mom always made it with soup, meat and tator tots (perfectly lined up). Her hotdish always tastes better than mine....of course, everything she makes tastes better!
